Apple patents folding iPhone: If the device falls, the hinge will automatically close to protect the screen
Admittedly, we also know that Apple often patents features or innovations that are not always commercially applied. But if this patent is applied to the folding iPhone, it could be one of the most innovative and useful features.
Specifically, Insider discovered on March 16th, Apple filed a new patent, named “Self-closing display device and screen protection techniques using fall detection.” In this patent, Apple uses an accelerometer sensor to determine if the phone is falling, and if so, it will automatically close the hinge of the folding device to protect the flexible screen inside before hitting the ground.

The patent also states that the hinge does not need to close completely, but only needs to create a folding angle below 180 degrees, which improves screen protection much more than letting the device fall face down on the floor. , because then the device will hit the ground with its edge.
This is not Apple’s only patent related to folding iPhones. Last month Apple filed a patent covering the entire body with a flexible membrane layer capable of recognizing touch gestures, allowing users to interact with their phones in any position without having to open them. fold out.

Rumors about folding iPhones have been around for a long time, somewhere around 2016, three years before Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold launch. Recent rumors say folding iPhones will launch somewhere around 2025. Then by 2026 or 2027 there will be foldable MacBook screens. That means it’s too early for the iPhone 15 series to get a “folding phone” version this year.

Considering the cost of producing and owning a flexible-screen phone today, Apple’s patented screen protection feature is very useful for users. But at the same time, this feature can also make folding iPhones more expensive.

Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight, once said that Apple could charge $2,500 for its first flexible-screen iPhone.
