A monogram is a motif made by combining letters, usually two or three, which are intertwined or overlapped to represent an individual, company, or kingdom. The royals created passion for the monogram and throughout history people have embraced monograms as a way to elevate their everyday lives and a symbol for the sovereign.
For centuries, anyone with money (literacy, after all, was a skill reserved for the wealthy and powerful) would commission an artisan to create a stylish monogram, which was used to identify personal property, from handkerchief to silverware to personal journals. Members of the Victorian era aristocracy often used the monogram as an emblem of their high rank in society. But, while the monogram may have a very close connection to royalty and other wealthy individuals, it is very widely used today on a variety of personal items like stationeries and most common in wedding invitations.
Even in today's world, monograms still gives a sense of exclusivity to the products we posses. Aside from the true cost of commissioning a designer to design it, there's also a cost of having it produced. Having your iPod engraved with your monogram or creating an artwork piece made with 24 carats gold gilding like this one, is still not cheap.
