Artiststatement:

Inmy artwork I explore human movement by confronting visual mediathrough installation mainly in the public realm. Sociallandscape, Historiography and memories in displacementare my main obsessions. Using video, text and photography astools of communication, my installation work relies on site-specificconstructs firmly attached to traveling concepts. The interventions engage with history, time and space, claiming a semantic where ancient tools and contemporary devicescombine in one and only discourse.

Atpresent, influenced by a new constellation of experiences related tomigration and oblivion, my work has turned into a continuouscollection of souvenirs and memories. Being capable ofspeaking different languages and representing antagonistic societieswithin my mixed genetic background, I understand myself as a personof nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Constantly an outsider, Ikeep trying to discover those locations in which cultures aresimilar.

Iam developing the projects “On the Archeology of traveling”,”Lost Translations”, “The small museum of emigrational wonders”and “Palimpsests”. Myinvestigation focuses on questions on traveling, especially inemigrational situations in and around Latin-America; by establishingideas about the hybrid imaginary created during displacement and thesubsequent discourse provoked on one hand, through the impact of thearrival to a foreign land, and on the other, in the mixture betweencultures. The backbone of the work is set up on the Caribbeanpost-colonial discourse as a model for post-modern behavior andmulticultural thought. Ihave developed a methodology in which theoretical concepts are putunder the magnifier of practical endeavors. For each theoreticalhypothesis I have tried to develop a work of art that illustrates ordiscusses the subject.
