FORCED CONNECTIONS
Creating icons is more challenging than it may seem. Great icons take a lot of time and dedication into making the right one. My goal was to create six icons made from twelve randomly chosen words and pair them together. Using only negative and positive space was the major focus as well. It is not easy to combine two subjects into one and have them work together. The pairs I chose were baked football, superior hero, wiry villain, messy piano, snobbish addition, and thankful performance.
Starting was probably the most difficult part of this whole process. I had to think hard about how to draw out the ideas and actually focus. When creating icons the crucial part was to think outside the box. Sadly I was thinking inside the box for the most part. I did manage to draw out some images and pictured the way I wanted them to look. After drawing out my sketches I sat down with some of my peers and we went through the ones that best suited each pair. Once done, I went back to illustrating a rough draft of the ones that were most liked.
FIRST WIP:
When my first work in progress came I knew I was being too detailed with my icons and tried to tone them down a bit because I was letting my inner illustrator come out. Even after realizing this, I still managed to make some of my icons still too detailed, but that was a learning moment for me. I took what my peers said to me on how I could improve them and I took those key factors into consideration when finalizing my icons.
SECOND WIP:
I managed to lessen the details and make them still visible even when scaled down.
In the end, finalizing my icons helped me learn more about making a good icon. My main goal was to make decent icons, but I feel that I was able to create overly decent icons.
FINALIZED ICONS:
There is still room for improvement and that is coming from me knowing I can do better, but for a novice, I am very pleased with my icons. The main lesson that I accomplished was learning a new skill with making icons and improving on my illustration skills as well.
