Living matter

Living matter is the graduation film of Brigitta and Bettina Boros, made at Illyés Art Academy in 2018. In the film, puppeteer's and two animation student's
thoughts and experiences meet each other, about the question: what causes us to see an inanimate matter as a living being?

The film was based on our interviews made with three puppeteers of the Budapest Puppet Theatre: Gábor Beratin, Katalin Kovács, and Nóra Semjén.
We wanted the visuals to constantly remind the viewers, that they are watching objects, which are only moving due to the magic of animation. For this reason, we used real objects, large-scale materials and lots of pixillation.
We tried out several designs for the main character, trying to find balance between unique and more generic features. In the end, we chose a very simple look, making it easier for the viewers to project any personality trait on the puppet. (Main puppet designs by Bettina Boros)
We made the plushies more colorful, with features emphasizing that they are the favourite toys of the narrator - and as such, needed some repairs over the years. (Plushie puppet designs by Brigitta Boros)
