Brief
To design a light for the domestic home that uses one of 3 specific light sources. Lighting company TP24 and architectural company ARUP worked with us on this project.
Jacob is a twist and locking light designed for children's bedrooms. The head of Jacob can move into one of 4 grooves, pointing the light source in different directions. The lenses can also be changed to alter the colour of the light.
The light was based on the twisting and locking childrens toy and the name taken from a similar toy, the Jacob's ladder. The blocks above can all individually move, with the elastic slotting into any grooves. Thousands of shape possibilities can be created and it can amuse for hours!
Lots of models and prototypes were created during the manufacturing process. The light source can be seen in this photo; it's a pygmy LED bulb from company TP24 who worked alongside ARUP with us on this project.
Plenty of Solidworks and Keyshot renders were also produced before a final model was created. The same colours would be used to dye the wood blocks for the childrens version.
Above shows the final deisply for the light, inluding a concept board and GA drawing. The light comes in 3 different materials, so it attracts adult consumers as well as children.
