The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI) is a unit of the Indian Army that was established in 1962. It is a specialized infantry force specifically created to provide defense in the high altitude regions of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The first commander of the JKLI was Major Nawang Kapadia, who is credited with transforming this unit into an elite mountain warfare force. Major Kapadia was an experienced mountaineer who had served in the British Indian army during World War II and he used his expertise to lead and train the JKLI men with the utmost dedication.
