As a staple fiber, cotton is composed of natural plant fibers of various lengths. These fibers, soft and fluffy, are contained in the plant’s boll and can be woven and spun directly after harvesting. By contrast linen, made from flax, takes a longer time to harvest and create a fabric from. The fibers cannot be woven directly, but are stored after extraction for a lengthy period that serves to soften them.
In finished products, the difference between cotton and linen is significant in areas of performance. Linen can be up to three times stronger than cotton, and dries much more quickly. This helps dissipate heat and makes linen ideal for summer bedding or clothing. Linen does lack the elasticity of cotton, and this can lead to wrinkles in items. The extra steps required in producing linen also make it significantly more expensive than cotton.
