Amex Design Challenge / Vibrant African Market Place

Amex Design Challenge
Design Submission responding to the theme,"The vibrant African market place - Everyone's welcome".
Understanding the pattern, you first have to look at the African belief that unity and balance is true power. Being able to coexist with everything, as if everything is a puzzle to make a bigger picture. The pattern is a visual signifier referring to the various spectrums of life found in Africa but only together can we make the pattern come to life. You will see in the variations, when the pattern is placed to another, it naturally carries on without a disruption to the eye. True balance.

The pattern is designed to mimic movement through its symmetrical design and use of the triangle as its base. The reason for using the triangle, it has three sides and three is a number which has been seen as the perfect number. The number of harmony, wisdom and understanding, which is a natural cycle for everything. Putting across the idea of forward movement and balance. A highly relevant pattern in a world where businesses use the three pillars as metrics to guide themselves.

The triangular shapes movement, mimics the multiplication process of  a human cell. Alone it is a simple shape, but when combined on top of each other it starts to take the form of a complex design, which the human body is still a mystery to modern medicine and understanding. The pattern is a reference to the natural order of life and its constant change in its growth.

Creatively breaking the mold of African patterns, I developed the African continent symbol circled by the plane. The icon placed within the borders of the pattern is to give meaning to industrialization, trade, productivity, change, deep rooted culture and travel. Offering the pattern a place in African history, power and balance.
