12 Icons, Famous Landmarks

Concept:
The concept of this project was to show the major features and characteristics of major landmarks while simplifying each of them to have a softer and "cartoon" type feel.

Images of my sketches are attached in the post.

I began my sketches with a circle around each icon, but after going through a few of them the icon became more about the landmark than it did the icon silhouette itself. I ended up deleting the circle, and returned to my sketchbook to find a better way to show what's around without making the focus on the scenery. I ended up with a simple design that seems to "leak" the scenery, with the purpose of drawing the viewers attention into the icon itself.

I received feedback to fix the stroke thicknesses to all be the same and to be careful with putting icons in a circle. I removed the circle, applying that feedback immediately. The stroke thickness was a little more difficult because I liked how thick the stroke looked, however when I used it on smaller shapes, the color was lost due to how thick the stroke was. I ended up making the stroke thinner and making any stroke the same thickness.

I followed design principles in proximity, alignment, and color. I feel I met the requirements because I took these famous landmarks and created them in my own style, with my own simplification of them. They are recognizable to be known what they are, but they don't look how they look in real life.
