Assignment:
Illustrate and design a cover and endpaper for Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Cask of Amontillado.
The cover must include the author's name, the title and and the illustrator's name. Also, the endpaper must include a bookplate.
Process:
I chose quilling as a medium for it's association with the Victorian era and it's decorative nature. Inside of the quilled frame is a 3D skull submerged in blood or wine-like liquid (water with food dye), made out of paper in order to tie it back to the medium used for the frame.
For the endpaper I planned out a repeat pattern with tight paper circles that replicate pearls, and loose ovals, implying an empty frame.
All of the elements were later compiled and edited digitally.
