Collaborating on a project with a renowned fashion designer or brand can be a unique and exciting opportunity, especially when you find similarities in their design approaches and you decide to celebrate it through a new concept.
"We found that both adidas and Yohji Yamamoto explored the idea of "tension" in their designs, and we decided to use it as a starting point of the new Y-3 Runner 4D project. "
This idea was expressed through a variety of different concepts and ideas, such as the use of cables, both inner and outer structures, and a combination of hard and soft materials.
We knew that celebrating this common design philosophy would be the best and most authentic way to pay hommage to the collaboration, allowing both parties to build on each other's strengths and create a cohesive and innovative final product,
the Y-3 Runner 4D EXO.
The main objective of the shoe design was to create a distinctive appearance both when it is being worn and when it is not.
To achieve this, various design concepts were explored, focusing on the use of an external stiff structure that could change the shape of a soft material-based upper, all inspired by the above adidas and Yohji Yamamoto design references.
The idea of a moulded TPU “EXO-skeleton” emerged, which would extend out of the outsole and into the nylon-based upper. This TPU structure creates tension in the eyestay area, causing it to open as far as the properties of the material allow.
This design concept not only creates a distinct look when it is being worn, as the open eyestay area creates a sense of movement and dynamic, but also provides structural stability and support to the shoe.
The Y-3 Runner 4D EXO is also available in a striking bright white and transparent colorway.
This version of the shoe features a fully transparent yarn-knitted overlay, which provides a unique glimpse into the inner construction of the shoe. The transparent overlay allows the wearer to see the inner sock and the color accent of the insole, adding an additional layer of visual interest. This design choice not only adds a unique aesthetic to the shoe but also allows the wearer to appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the shoe's construction.
The transparent overlay and bright white colorway of the Y-3 Runner 4D EXO is a perfect example of how Yohji Yamamoto's avant-garde design aesthetic and Adidas' technical expertise can be brought together to create a visually striking and unique product.
