This research explores the creation of co-design methods that build and maintain long-term relationships in council development projects and engages in innovative design outcomes for the future of the city. A series of workshops were conducted with participants, including designers and urban planners.

Findings show that relationship dynamics developed better through conversational activities than pure brainstorming, and that innovative outcomes were best generated through the sharing of values and visions rather than one-sided communication.
Design Outcome
Following an iterative design process we ultimately developed The Shoe Box Co- Design Toolkit. Inspired by a phrase expressed during the co-design process, “Walking in my shoes”, it focuses on the need for stakeholder partners to develop a shared understanding to build and maintain long-term relationships.

The toolkit consists of:
An activity booklet, materials for each activity, and a reflective journal

The activity booklet is organised into six stages of relationship development. Council can select an appropriate activity depending on their current needs and challenges, and activities may be revisited at different timepoints in a project.
We then delivered the above toolkit to the Council for use in real context.
