YAWH - Sustainable Homeless Shelter

Design Concept
YAWH – (You Are Welcome Here) is a homeless shelter for women and children will be located in the heart of Oklahoma City. This area was chosen because of the many opportunities that will help people get back on their feet. The main purpose of YAWH is not just to help these people survive but to improve their way of life by providing a safe and secure place to stay, educating, teaching valuable skills, providing nutritional meals, giving emotional support, and much more. The design concept for the building is a combination of biophilic design, sustainability, and accessible design. Additionally, a bird inspires the shape of the building due to its freeing nature. When a bird spreads its wings and soars, it is thought to be as free as any animal could be. These people have suffered enough trauma and they deserve to experience this kind of freedom that excludes the pain and stress of homelessness. That is why I am designing a place that will give them the freedom to think, relax, and truly be happy.
