Project Title: RAG Alternative Fashion Magazine
Project Description: You will design the masthead, cover, table of contents, feature opener, and turn pages for a speculative magazine invented entirely by you. The magazine size (closed) will be 8 x 10 inches, so an open spread will be 16 x 10 inches. Choose one of these four categories for your magazine—sports, news/affairs, fashion/lifestyle, or destination. I chose fashion with a focus in alternative fashion & gender expression, with a featured article on Dorian Electra's fashion regarding gender fluidity and performance.
Approach: I wanted to create a magazine that would appeal to people like me who have an interest in alternative fashion, and take a more artistic approach to self expression regardless of gender presentation. I chose Dorian Electra as my featured article bc they tend to present in a way that meshes feminine and masculine, playing with the idea of gender as a presentation rather than an inherit identity you are born into. This fictional magazine would cover different ways that a person can express themselves in an alternative way, featuring a multitude of alternative ways of fashion presentation.
When it comes to visual identity, I wanted the overall feel of the design to feel alternative and playful that can move with the type of fashion being covered. The masthead is playful and the font plays with different sizes, shapes, and textures, while still working together as a whole. This is the identity of the brand. The color scheme of this fictional issue came together with the photoshoot in which I pulled the imagery for the featured article from, ending up with a color scheme of purples, yellows, blue/teals, black & white.
