NATURE IS THE ART OF GOD
– Dante Alighieri
Metal corrodes when it reacts with another chemical
such as oxygen, hydrogen, an electrical current, or even dirt, bacteria, or water. Corrosion can also happen when metals like steel are placed under too much stress causing the material to crack. It turns the metal weak, what was once thought to be valuable, and strong becomes weak gradually and starts to decay, just like human nature. It represents the phenomenon of compounding effect as well, that no matter how small, seemingly insignificant actions, be they positive or negative make such immense impacts. Nature gives it such a beautiful look, portraying abstract art on canvas. Proving true, what Marcus Tullius said, ‘’Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature.’’ I used hydrochloric acid, sodium bicarbonate, and acetic acid to experiment with how it still reacts with different chemicals.
A marriage between chemistry and art, isn’t that how photography was perceived initially? In fact, it’s in the name itself, ‘Photography’ literally means 'drawing with light‘ using a
mechanical device. The use of chemicals to produce the images, first on film and now the
interactions that take place on the sensors of modern digital devices. A beautiful combination of science and art.
