Rationale
My approach made in my composition had great influence from works produced by freelance illustrator, Alexis Marcou, more so his project commissioned by Hewlett Packard. This series is based on various earth elements – earth (land), fire and water. What makes his works successful is his ability to effectively merge the use of several media such as pencil, graphite, ink and graphical portions, consistently over a single composition. The bursts of colour throughout his works quite distinctively act as a key component to defining his individual style.
I derived from his style the graphical application of colour strokes, which emphasise the water element, with the addition of pencil and ink formulating the overall structure. The narrative behind this composition is ‘The alternate Titanic ending’. At a distant glance it characterises as a knife, however, upon closer inspection it is seen that the kraken shapes the handle and the blade is completed by use of the passenger liner, Titanic – which sank upon impact with an iceberg in 1912. The way in which this composition relates back to the topic rescue is even though it was a traumatic event there’s since been various alternate parodies and humorous takes on the incident – in a direct line to the Titanic, its passengers are placed into a life or death situation of which requires rescuing.
