Organization Tips for Apartment Dwellers

In an apartment with limited space, every nook and cranny should have a function. Renters can implement clever organizational tips and tricks to help their space feel less cramped and more functional.
The first step to apartment organization is decluttering. Homes have a way of accumulating clothing, gadgets, appliances, and home goods over time. Whether the apartment has drawers overflowing with clothes or many children’s toys, renters should look around the home to consider what they actually use.
Getting rid of unused items clears up valuable space in the apartment, helping residents feel accomplished and in control of their space. Decluttering also makes frequently used items easier to access.
Clothing tends to take up a large amount of storage space. Apartment dwellers without ample closet space will need to carefully consider what they want to keep. Anything that has not been worn in a year or more should go into a donation pile. Certain items may have sentimental value; these could be placed in a plastic tote or vacuum sealed so as not to occupy vital closet real estate.
In addition to clearing unworn items, individuals can implement space-saving solutions in their closets. An over-the-door hanging shoe organizer can handle multiple pairs of lightweight shoes, while storage bins on the top shelf can corral loose pieces and clear up space for hanging items. Hanging storage bins create vertical storage space and clear the floor for other items.
To create space for a vanity or small desk, renters might consider moving shoes and clothing to under-the-bed storage bins. Then, they can implement office storage solutions into the new office space. This includes file folders for loose papers, pen holders, and a desktop organizer for miscellaneous items. Similar storage strategies work in a dedicated office space.
After a round or two of decluttering large areas, renters should open cabinets and drawers. Especially in an apartment without ample storage, these areas become the collection site for items that don’t have a permanent home.
Renters should think about streamlining their organization by gathering similar items in one place. For example, does the under-sink cabinet have multiple bottles of household cleaners? Choose versatile products (an all-in-one bathroom cleaner instead of separate formulas for bath and counters, for example) and keep them in a basket or tote that is easy to carry from room to room when cleaning. Does the kitchen junk drawer have a collection of non-working pens and old take-out menus? Periodically cleaning drawers and tossing unnecessary objects can create a peaceful home environment.
To organize small items, drawer dividers and small bins can create designated areas. Tying up loose cables with bands or cable ties can also keep storage space organized. Apartment dwellers should maximize their storage by taking advantage of dual-purpose furniture.
In the living room, for example, an ottoman that stores blankets can serve double duty as a coffee table with a tray on top. In the kitchen, the space above cabinets can store infrequently used items such as large pots or vases. Finally, small aesthetic details make a big difference to the feel of a space. Plants and wall art can have a refreshing effect, helping even small spaces feel larger and less cramped.
