The city has had many names throughout its history, Basra being the most common. In Arabic, the word baṣrah means "the overwatcher," which may have been an allusion to the city's origin as an Arab military base against the Sassanids. Others have argued that the name is derived from the Aramaic word basratha, meaning "place of huts, settlement.
The idea of the logo consists of four elements that represent the identity of the city of Basra :
The date palm: It is an ancient Iraqi symbol closely linked to the history of Iraq. The date palm can be seen in inscriptions and carvings on stones and other ancient artifacts of ancient Mesopotamia. Basra is a city that is distinguished by date palm cultivation until its name was associated with it. The palm tree is closely linked to Basra and has become part of its cultural heritage. That is why I choose it as the main symbol in the composition of the logo. The nine palm-fronds represent the number of the nine districts in Basra. Palms are a symbol for permanence, strength, and determination.
The sails of boats: It is an indication that Basra is a port city with ships and fishing boats due to its distinctive geographical location which overlooks two rivers as well as the Arabian Gulf Sea which made the city a nautical starting point towards the world and it is a symbol of continuation and advancement.
The two rivers: Water is part of the geography of Basra, as well as the gateway of the world. From the symbols of water in Basra is the meeting of the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates. My composition represents how the two rivers meet and form a balanced and symmetrical symbol, I call it wings of the two rivers.
The two palm-fronds: So that the logo is balanced and has a visual and conceptual dimension, I added the symbol of the two fronds as a sign of the unity of the people of Basra with all its social components and the multiple religious ones, which throughout history have proven their unity.

-- النخلــــــــة .. وهي رمز عراقي قديم ارتبط ارتباطاً وثيقاً بتاريخ العراق من خلال الرموز التي جائت في اغلب النقوشات والرسومات الحجرية وغيرها في القطع الاثرية القديمة المستكشفة لحضارة مابين النهرين .. وكانت البصرة المدينة المميزة بزراعة النخيل حتى ارتبط اسمها بالنخلة ارتباطاً وثيقاً واصبحت جزء من موروثها الثقافي والشعبي وحتى التجاري والصناعي .. لذا استخدمت النخلة كرمز اساسي في تكوين الشعار .. وجاء عدد السعفات التسعة تمثيلاً لعدد اقضية البصرة التسعة ..والنخلة رمز للديمومة والقوة والإصرار .
-- أشرعــــة القــــــوارب : وهي دلالة على ان البصرة مدينة تعلق باسمها السفن والإبحار وقوارب الصيد والتجارة لموقعها الجغرافي المميز الذي يطل على نهرين كبيرين وكذلك على الخليج العربي مما جعل من المدينة نقطة انطلاق مائية نحو العالم .. والأشرعة ترمز للاستمرار والتقدم.
-- النهريـــــــن : المياه هي جزء من جغرافيا البصرة وكذلك بوابة من بوابات الانطلاق نحو العالم او العكس ومن اهم رموز المياه في المدينة هو التقاء نهري دجلة والفرات لذا وظفت هذا الالتقاء ليعطي قوة ووضوح تكويني يمثل كيفية التقاء النهرين ووظيفتهما في التنقل والنقل وتكوين رمز متوازن ومناظر بصرياً اسميته اجنحة النهرين.
-- السعفتيــــــن : حتى يكون الشعار متوازن وذات بعد بصري ومفاهيمي اضفت رمز السعفتين ذات التشعب المتوازن والمتعدد ويلتقيان في نهايتهما دلالة على لُحمة ابناء البصرة بمختلف مكوناتهم الاجتماعية والدينية والمناطقية المتعددة والتي اثبتت عبر التاريخ وحدتهم والفتهم بعضهم مع بعض
