TORQUE SCREW DRIVER CONCEPT

The Torque Screw Driver is a concept that embodies the fundamentals of universal design and emotional design. Its shape and unique flip out legs make it an accessible object for any user. The Torque was designed in association with Arthritis Ireland the object of this project was to design a product, space, service, Interface... that would aid sufferers of arthritis.

Through the research phase it was found that a large majority of sufferers detested the fact that they could not do any kind of simple household DIY (Changing plugs, putting up picture frames etc...) due to their poor dexterity.

The Torque allows the user to hold the Screw Driver in a variety of different positions, e.g. if they have a bad thumb joint it can be held between their fingers. This means the user can find the most comfortable and stress free position. The act of driving the screw in or out is purely instigated through pressure which takes the strain of twisting motions off the person’s wrist and elbow.

One of the Torques main design features ergonomic handle which was conceived through working with sufferers and over 50 different foam models to determine the perfect size and shape. This project won 2nd place in the Arthritis Ireland 'easy to use' design innovation awards in 2011.
