Bliss (Final Major Project)

Bliss explores the culture of extended family living in the Maldives to determine the need to prioritize the importance of personal space, especially for couples. Bliss is an environment where married couples are encouraged to maintain their sense of identity while still enjoying time together as a couple. Bliss hopes to reevaluate what it means to be in a married relationship. The aim of Bliss is to inspire couples to value autonomy while also allowing them to spend quality time together to create healthy and fulfilling marriages.
This project will provide a space exclusive to couples with workshops, various date night activities and access to diverse resources that give information on relationships and self-improvement, allowing couples to either, spend quality time together or spend time apart enjoying activities independently.
For concept, I asked four couples to describe how they feel in their marriage and made artwork based on them. One of the paintings was used to make a concept model from which, the shape of the building as well as the vectors for the building were derived. The other design drivers are conceits from concept like the materials chosen to make a person feel a certain way or give off a certain atmosphere.
The concept for branding of Bliss comes from things and acts that are romantically inclined like flowers, rain, music, letters, candle light, books, old architecture, scrap booking, etc. Predominantly, scrapbook journaling and flowers (their positive effects on people) represent the feel and mood of the brand.

The materials for Bliss were chosen with the branding and concept in mind. Some of the materials like cork and limestone tile represent the rough patches couples face in marriages while the smooth textures of  velvet, fiberglass and copper  represent the more fun, sensual and smooth sailing parts of a relationship. The varying opacity of materials refer to the lack of privacy in Maldivian households as well as in a marriage and hence is used in ways to get people thinking about such topics simply by being in the space.
