Arjama at the Cemetery

Arjama at the Cemetery

This is South Park Street Cemetery in Kolkata and was one of the places I really wanted to visit. It has graves from the early 1800s and is the one of the earliest non-church cemeteries.
Arjama wanted to show me around and I had asked her to wear a white Saree that day to shoot around old Kolkata to fit the aesthetic I was going for.

To me, these portraits mean a girl visiting the dead while going through an existential crisis.
The picture on top shows the vastness and how lost she feels in her life right now. When a person reaches a stage of 'Dust thou art, dust thou returnest' it's hard to find a meaning of life, a purpose. Maybe, reading what's written on the tombstones is what will help the girl understand the lives these people lived, which will help her understand her own a little better.
