DESIGNS AND STRATEGY FOR PLAKKIES/KADANGAS

Innovative flip-flop designs and implementation strategy
Project with a team of five master students for The Ubuntu Company, the producer of 'Plakkies' (fashionable flip-flops made of old car tires). The Ubuntu Company is a 100% non-profit organisation. Its goal is to create job opportunities and generate money for the KidsRights-projects for orphan children in South Africa.

We redeveloped the current flip-flop, rebranded the product to Kadangas (which was needed because of legal issues) and developed a midterm-strategy which gradually moves from the current flip-flops to sandals, to be able to sell more products and gain a bigger margin.
Redesign of the current flip-flop

From conducted research we found out that a considerable amount of people didn't fit the current design: the flip-flop was either to wide or to small. This was the main focus of our redesign. We created a flip-flop with an adjustable cuff. We looked into the production-process to create these designs with minimal adaptations to the supply chain, to keep the costs low.
Midterm-strategy

For the midterm-strategy we designed the next generation products. To support KidsRights we developed a strategy around sandals. This will create more money, by selling more products and gaining a bigger margin. The midterm-strategy looks at an additional four years and includes four sandal-designs and a marketing strategy. We looked into the production-process to create these designs with minimal adaptations to the supply chain, to keep the costs low.
Below are the four sandal-designs.
