GEOSPACES

Geospaces is an extended visual essay of ideas, images, drawings and projects that follows the work of Alper Derinboğaz over the past decade, framing an approach to architecture based on empathy with earth. Operating within a non-anthropocentric narrative, it considers the insignificance of humans in relation to earth, diverse species and post-human futures.
The study questions, “What if we see buildings as iterations of nature rather than artificial objects?” Taking this question as a starting point, the aim was to think the book itself not as a seperated and isolated object, but rather a contiunation of its environment. As a reflective layer the metallic cover, creates a relationship between the book and its surroundings and turns it into iterations of them.
In addition to editorial design, a collection of products such as picnic blanket, hoodies and tote bags were designed and exhibited at the Milan Design Week at Geospaces's launch. Picnic blanket was chosen as a product since its the simplest, most minimal form of textile as architecture, and proof that we don’t need complex designs to create our own living spaces. Situated in the liminal space between textile and architecture, the blanket intends to minimize the footprint of architectural practices while maintaining a design-led approach to human necessities. Inspired by the flow of natural forms within the same space it is a sustainably manufactured architectural layout for picnicking space. This collection is a collaboration between two Istanbul-based studios; architecture practice Salon Alper Derinboğaz and design office Reflect Studio. The pieces in this collection balance on the threshold between architecture and textile.
