Heritage Resource Management
System as a Problem Area - A Case Study
By Gayatri Bagad, Shivam Thakur and Uddhav Labde.
Heritage, both natural and cultural, provide tremendous value to our human society. But this irreplaceable heritage is globally facing various problems. Heritage sites that were preserved undisturbed for thousands of years have suddenly degraded to irreversible states. Natural causes and historic events have contributed to destruction of sites. But now we have the means to better preserve our heritage to better understand them and preserve it for thousands of years to come.

Problem Statement
Lack of Information about the site prevents visitors to holistically understand the site.
A holistic understanding about heritage is not entirely developed in many visitors and public through their education or culturally. Visitors thus face problems understanding the importance of the sites they visit. Minimum information provided at sites limits scope for historic visualization and understanding the history or importance about the site.
Design Objective
Make people value their heritage
Create a hybrid (Physical, Digital) interactive multimedia learning experience for the visitors at Heritage Sites.
The visitors would be expected to self-explore and interact with the site and site artifacts to result in better understanding of the site.
Adding visualization wherever necessary and where providing visualization isn't currently possible.
Having small gamified interactive activities.
Reducing the amount of put-up text boxes and built-up structures to help maintain the site and its surroundings.
The solutions should be scalable and applicable to similar Heritage Sites.
A different solution would be required as per needs of the site.
e.g. For a site like Ajanta a VR experience center could be created to reduce impact of tourism on the site.
Providing  experience centers away from sites (in cities, etc.) to reduce the impact of tourism on sites.

Visitor Journey Map Overview
Journey When Entering Site
Interpretation Center in Peshwa Wada style.
The Interpretation Center
The Center is designed to represent the regional architecture of 16th CE Peshwa style courtyard.
The Peshwa and Pune style 'wada' influence in the building is used to give the visitors the feel of the culture during the evolution of the temple.
The courtyard area in the interior is kept vacant to view the augmented site introduction.
The open courtyard would bring in natural light and during monsoons rains thus, enhancing the Augmented Experience with the real-life weather.
Visitor proceed to exploring site with the companion App
With use of all the features, the visitor explores the site as per their pace and interests.
