Peppermint brush in red
This poster design is based on a portrait of Kabuki actor Ōtani Oniji III in the role of a samurai’s manservant from the play The Colored Reins of a Loving Wife (Koi nyōbō somewake tazuna). Using Japanese katakana characters that loosely resemble english to form the phrase "I DID NOT MAKE YOU SICK". I specifically chose this portrait because there is a direct implication towards hierarchy and class. There is no doubt that people of colour are still seen as lesser beings.

Page assist, Mirror tool
Using the mirror tool in Procreate, I drew a woman made of origami. She stands in front of a red circle that is resemblant of the Japanese flag. This design is the most simple both in subject and text but the point is straightforward.

Peppermint brush in red
Following the theme of origami again, I created a grid to act as the background to a self portrait. I used the same idea of using Japanese katakana characters that resemble english letters. This time, I formed "I DID NOT MAKE YOU SICK" in the top right corner. This comments on how Covid-19 is still fueling Anti-Asian Racism and Xenophobia Worldwide.

Round brush in Black, white and red
Ink bleed brush in black
The main colours I chose in this version of the poster design is black, white and red. The red was used again to visually represent the Japanese flag. Without the addition of the grey, the work would have felt too empty and unfinished. The self portrait

The colours I used in the grid this time are directly sourced from photos I took in my last visit to Japan in 2018. The self portrait remains the same black colour in this iteration as it stands out from the background.
Reflection: Living through a global pandemic caused by COVID-19 with an Asian immigrant mother has proven to be difficult and enraging. Having experienced racism myself, I knew that I wanted to focus this poster exercise on racism. The very first thing I did was research and gather information to direct myself towards the right direction and I crunched in the term "racism poster" into google. I was surprised by the lack of Asian representation in this google search and this immediately set me into the direction to "STOP ASIAN HATE". The general target audience for this task is young adults, who have grown up with the internet and arguably both understand and use it the most often. Although I understand what the katakana characters are trying to read, I do understand that it will be difficult for some to decipher.
