This was an exercise in grisaille. I wanted to see if underpainting in monochrome added any depth to finished portrait. I think it did, or at least it helped focus my work on getting better highs and lows. It was also a homage to the great Van Hals and his awesome Laughing Cavalier, but only slightly.
