Installation: Spatial Apparatus [USC]

Modular installation at the USC School of Architecture
With Derek Greene and Nicole Friend
The focus of this project is the creation of a modular system by means of aggregation and mutation. A relatively simple field condition is transformed parametrically by site and program necessities. This was an exercise in bridging the gap between an analog modeling and design process and a software-based digital process.
Modules were designed using a paper folding process. The module--shown individually below--was chosen do to connective possibilities and flexibility. The tendency of the original module was to form four-piece cells and expand in a flat mat pattern, allowing for minimal rotation within the connections.
Programatic requirements were chosen based on existing site uses, views and wind patterns.
The form that came out of the programatic requirements and analysis of site forces was then created in Gehry Technologies' DigitalProject software.
The individual modules, when instantiated into the DigitalProject form, were transformed into hundreds of unique modules. Optimized for construction. each piece was laser cut, formed into four-piece cells and installed.
