SLR: Person, People, Place (2022)

The project consists of three ‘factually’ based visual narratives. One based
on a person, the other on a group of people, and the third about a place. Plus one more place, that i didn't end up handing in.

I was extremely nervous about using a film camera - a new tool and work process. I quickly discovered the joy of film photography, even though I didn’t totally know what I was doing. Only later, I found out, how bad those first photos were. -Thankfully some of them could be saved in post-production. But after learning , I was confident about what my photos will look like. When taking pictures of people, I had to muster up the courage. I was very proud of myself getting out of my comfort zone.

Part of the project was developing the film, scanning, spotting (dust specs), editing (changing tonal range and cropping), preparing for print and arranging for our exhibition.

Person // The Garnethill Gardener
John doesn’t only tend to his own garden, but also Garnethill Community Garden across the street. He documents the garden, to see what’s where. The plants are chosen, so that there’s a nice variety and at different times different flowers are blooming.
While tying together these bent town daffodils, he explained the importance of stepping stones in a garden. You know there’s nothing there, that you planted and might trample.

People // Hungarians Voting in Edinburgh
On the 3rd of April myself and other Hungarians living in the area went to Edinburgh to cast our votes. Besides selecting our parliament for the next four years we also voted about a government-initiated referendum on LGBTQ+ rights. Some Hungarians called on the public to cast invalid ballots for the referendum, because the questions were phrased so that you’d answer what the government wants - not letting minors learn in school about the topic. There were enough invalid votes to achieve that goal, but Orbán was re-elected.
I went back after voting around noon to document the long queue. There was a Progress pride flag I spotted on the ground near by saying: You are not alone.
Place // Quiet Portobello
On a rainy chilly afternoon, the Portobello beach doesn’t have many visitors. Looking at these empty and quiet scenes, you get a sense of calmness. The zigzagging concrete wall adds an element of playfulness to the still scene. The series of photographs give a feeling of going down to the water from the edge of the city.
Place // Conic hill
I was happy that I was able to combine an assignment with exploring Scotland’s beautiful landscapes. When leaving the city, it was still foggy, and I was scared it would stay like that. Thankfully, by the time I got to Conic hill, the sky was clear, giving me a scenic view. My first photo was taken as the sun first shined into the woods. The photographs take the viewer on a journey from the woods to the top of the hill. The higher you are, the more you see of the scene below.
