Ferry: Decentralised File Sharing

Brief Introduction

This project began with a spark of an idea and the goal to try to complete the simplest hackathon idea for ETHGlobal and Protocol Labs HackFS 2021.

So I wanted to create a simple tool for a seemingly simple job, transferring files. I was inspired by a number of decentralised storage projects I had been working on in 2021 and this was my first time I went into a hackathon with a clear goal of what to build. So, 1 full stack developer, 1 solidity developer and 2 UXers went to the ETHGlobal HackFS 2021 hackathon at the beginning of August 2021 and began to build Ferry V1.0

Essentially, the idea was to build a web 3 version of wetransfer, a peer to peer form of file sharing for a limited amount of time using IPFS.

In the beginning the only goal was to replicate the web2 idea as a web3 idea, but upon initial tech research efforts we found that Protocol Labs had built a very essential piece of infrastructure to begin an idea like this, called web3.storage. This tool greatly reduced the complexity of our idea and this is where we started focussing on great UX and the ability to encourage web3 adoption outside the web3 space.
