Background Information

Around the time of Unit 1, I had seen the BBC "Pride and Prejudice" series and had started reading the book. When we got the book cover assignment, I instantly thought of "Pride and Prejudice." Since one of the requirements was using an analogous color scheme, I thought the English countryside would be perfect to focus on for the illustration.

Design Process

Colors
To create this piece, I decided to focus on the analogous colors of green, orange, and yellow.

Design Elements
I created the first rolling hill with the pen tool and then refined it with the direct selection tool. Once I was happy with the organic shape, I duplicated two more versions of them, used Transform to flip the orientation of each shape to create variations in the hills, and then used shades of green to simulate a three-dimensional space. I used a clipping mask to clip the rolling hills onto the off-white background, a color that harmonized well with the orange, yellow, and green.

To make a heart shape, I used the anchor point tool to modify a circle into a teardrop, dragged the bottom node until part of the left side was flat, created a copy, and then flipped the copy using the transform tool. To join them, I used the unite function. I created two more copies and then used the distribution tool to ensure they were evenly spaced. I placed them underneath the last few letters of the title.

The house is a simplified version of Pemberly (based off the Chatsworth House, which was Pemberly in the 2005 film). I started with the base rectangle and triangle in the top center to represent the structure of the mansion. Using a Chatsworth House image as a reference, I created the windows. I started with the rectangle tool, and then placed lines along the X and Y axes. I used cmd+d tool to make copies of the lines, ensuring that the lines would match the number of lines in the windows of the Chatsworth House. I then adjusted the lines and used the distribution tool to make sure the spacing was even. I repeated the same process for the top railing. To create the structure of the balustrades, I used unite on the pathfinder menu to combine a rectangle and triangle. I created the top part of the balustrades using a combination of modified ellipses and the pen tool. I arranged them based on the pattern of the Chatsworth Mansion. The gray color blends in well with the analogous color scheme and off-white of the background.

Font
For the title typeface, I used a legible script typeface, LiebeGerda, in its regular italic form. The author name is a typeface, Fino Sans, that complements the title.
