ShiftAway is an animation that aims to discourage online verbal aggression by illustrating the insufficiencies in communication that tend to cause it, as well as the self-sustaining cycle of anger it can generate. Using abstract representation to avoid exclusion, the piece depicts a generic scenario where hostility is common and presents alternate courses of action. The piece draws from data on anger management, anger diffusion and online aggression. It ultimately proposes identifying specific causes of anger, engaging in distracting activities as ways of delaying our response and only then addressing infuriating situations.
