Touch From a Distance

I made this garment to heighten the sense of touch in the human back. I looked to the various ways that animals sense touch for inspiration to adapt the system in place in the human body.

The final piece is inspired by whiskers, hair follicles, and spikes -- all used by various animals, such as cats and porcupines.. The garment has twenty "feelers" that adapt the body's existing touch receptors. The long protrusions are stable and cause movement when stimulated, causing a connected disk to react and move on the inside of the garment, touching the body. Thus, when a "feeler" is stimulated, that movement can be felt easily by the wearer.
