After the fires that took place in Bodrum and its surroundings in August 2021, especially the Mazı region, were severely damaged, the students of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture of MEF University, as a compulsory internship during the summer months and now a traditional 2-week collective design and production process Design and Build! They informed the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture of MEF University that they wanted to build their studio in Bodrum Mazı, this time completely voluntarily.
During the interviews, it was determined that there is a need for a playground for the preschool children of Yukarı Mazı Primary School. MEF University Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture dean Arda İnceoğlu, faculty member Ozan Avcı, Ahu Sökmenoğlu Sohtorik and a team of 20 volunteer architecture students developed a wooden playhouse design proposal that would meet this need, and designed this design in Yukarı Mazı between 22-29 October 2021. They built the primary school in the garden.
sections
This project, which was called “Our Playhouse” by the children after it was completed, is located in the idle area in the backyard of Yukarı Mazı Primary School. It is aimed that this forgotten unqualified area gain an identity with the designed playground.
The design consists of 4 sections: Play Tunnel, Tree House and Puppet Theater viewing platforms and Seating Area. The design begins with a play tunnel that takes pre-school children through the door from which they exit the building and carries them to the part of the garden reserved for them.
This tunnel, which establishes a strong relationship with the area it is in, stretches along the existing cypress trees. In a harmonious relationship with the trunk forms of the trees and by observing the child’s scale, the play tunnel carries the children to a tree house.
plans
The tree house integrates with the shadow of the olive tree around which it is placed, and is a playground/space where children can play. The tree house also serves as a stage for a puppet theater. Wooden planes of different levels and sizes facing the stage, on the other hand, form the viewing platforms of the Puppet Theater, which constitutes the third part of the design.
Finally, these platforms integrate with a desk and bench, creating a suitable space for teachers to use.
