For the second project for our chair studio, we built a 'soft chair'. We had to use the webbing technique and build up layers of foam and stuffing for the seat. I wanted to incorporate my Korean culture into this chair, which led me to create a pattern for the back. The back is created using a simple door frame pattern frequently used in traditional houses. But instead of using wood to create the pattern, I made cushions for the empty spaces that the pattern creates, which ultimately shows the pattern through the empty spaces created by the cushions. Underneath the cushions on the back of the chair, I applied the traditional Korean paper called 'Hanji' which also have the Korean characters used in the past.
