NYT Editorial Spread

Statement:
These spreads are my take on a New York Times article about a 3D printer that builds homes in Tabasco, Mexico that saves lives from extreme weather conditions. The article, first seen in September 2021, explains how because homes are not able to be made very durable, floods often cause damage to many people's houses. My idea was to shine light on how serious the situation is and how helpful these printers can be to a community.

Concept:
The most important takeaway from the article for me was that these large printers were saving lives in Tabasco Mexico. By allowing more durable houses to be created, dangerous weather conditions such as flooding are far less severe and would lead to less casualties. It is because of this reason that I gave the printer the center of attention within the spreads, creating a fictional one in the first spread, and a more realistic looking one within the second spread.
Process:
Adobe Fresco allowed me to hand draw all of the images shown, and even the ones not used shown below. For the drawing style, I went with a printmaking look since it would best fit the theme of printers and the idea of remaking. The reason for making all the houses look the same is not only because the printer copies the designs, but to also create a sense of community the headline for the article speaks of. I then used InDesign to form the spread, create my own infographic, and insert the article (written by Debra Kamin.)
