Robotic Teacher Training

Robotic Teacher Training for Jerusalem
INDUSTRY: Education
SKILLS: Robotics, Scratch, Teaching
PRESS:
BUSINESS:
in 2017 Israel decided to make robotics training an integral part of the learning materials. Great news for kids, but bad news for the schools who did not have skilled teachers who were ready to do this. I was asked to train 60 teachers in the Jerusalem region. I had 1 week to train teachers coming from various backgrounds, most did not have any background with robotics or programming at all. An obvious challenge.
Creative Workshop Planning Made Things Possible
DESIGN:
Approaching this challenge in a traditional manner would result in an obvious failure. I had to do this differently.
I divided the group into sub-groups. Each received a project which they had to build and write the lesson plan to teach it (4th day). Each group had to present the results to the others and share the materials and code (5th day).
To get there, I had to teach them the basic skills and commands needed for this to happen (2nd and 3rd day).
The 1st day was used to pump motivation into the participants, showing them they are able to command the robot.

SELECTED FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS:
"Teacher was always patient, and encoraging. He gave me a feeling that I can do it!"
"I enjoyed that even when we arrived to a dead end, the teacher did not provide the answer, and let us discover the way out!"
"Learning by doing, and from our mistakes, was very exciting and insightful"
"It was really important that we realize that we will have issues and problems, but we should not fear them"
"Oz taught me how to teach without being too difficult to the students. He showed me how to flow with the students, rather than pushing them too hard"
