Reuleaux Fruit Holder

Reuleaux Fruit Holder is a carved wooden fruit holder that cradles specifically 1 large and 3 small fruits. It takes the shape of a reuleaux triangle from the top view. By having a curved top and bottom profile, Reuleaux is self-balancing and tilts towards the heavier side. It can be spun while balanced, creating a merry-go-round of fruits. Reuleaux adds an interactive, fun element to the usually static forms that dominate the dining table. It invites subtle play to an area where it is usually frowned upon.

Shifting weight
The top and bottom faces of Reuleaux are visual inversions of each other and meet at the rim. This creates visual novelty from all angles.
Reuleaux is inspired by the water waves and the lotus seed pod. It was simplified through iteration to take its final form. Formal studies were done using clay, and the construction was prototyped using blue foam. The final form is drawn on illustrator to ensure precision and accuracy.
The rough shape is first obtained using the band saw. After which the wood is shaped with hand tools like gouges and chisels. Details are added with finer hand tools. Reuleaux is finished with dark turquoise milk paint and butcher block oil.
