Symbiosis

Taking the relationship between ocean and human being as a central metaphor, I concentrate on how the marine ecology is being disturbed by human activities. I set my presentation on a parabolic landscape of the symbiosis between different fish and coral reefs.

Coral and coral fishes both grow in shallow seas, with brilliant colors, diverse shapes and ever-changing patterns. There are three kinds of fishes that co-grow with corals. The first kind of fishes would simulate the color and shape of the corals, making their own patterns resemble to their hosts. By hiding in and relying on corals, they would capture food and live within corals. While the second type of fishes cooperate with corals by relying on the color shape of corals to hunt, i.e. to use coral as their own stronghold. The third type of fishes, however, simply live near as well as feed on corals. They also forage or hit corals, even raise sea sands that impede corals' breathing and growing.

The symbiosis between coral and fishes has some similarity of the human-ocean relationship. Long time ago, the ocean was mysterious to human society, and human depended on the marine grace to survive. Later, with the advancement of industrial civilization, human's ambitions became so big as we learnt how to further control the marine resources. We thus started a tremendously catching of marine life, launched tourism development, and vastly discharged the waste into our sea... Now, due to the systematically interference of human activities, the marine ecology has been gradually destroyed.

Thus, I just want to raise my urgent concern through this project: if the ocean will no longer provide us with shelter, whence and where should our human be?
