Being in awe of the human body, it's movements and all it is capable of, a project centering on Jiu Jitsu was a way to capture the different and unconventional shapes the practitioner's body makes.

At the time of these illustrations, I decided to take a break from training so that I could focus on my projects, however being obsessed with Mixed Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu, I found a way to incorporate my training into one of my projects titled 'Processes of Illustration'.

I thought it would be interesting to capture my training partners sparring. To the outsider, or 'non-practitioner', Jiu Jitsu can look awkward- the full contact, intertwining of bodies, the push and the pull. However Jiu Jitsu is an art and a science, a chess game, knowing which point on your opponents body to apply pressure to in order to manipulate their body into a position you want is genius and magic.

I used black ink to capture sequences of my fellow practitioners mid-spar, the fluidity in this medium allowing me to convey the fluidity of their bodies whilst rolling around the mats intertwined, forming one shape to the next.
