This was an illustration project for a school assignment. The assignment was to redesign the covers (as well as end pages, title pages, and title lettering) to the popular children's book series, "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark". We were allowed to change the concept/goals/target audience.
I decided to gear my covers towards kids who want to be fearless and badass. When I read these books as a kid, I never wanted to admit to being afraid; I read them to prove that I could handle it. Hence, I took some of the stories and themes, and reversed the roles between the "scary" and the "scared". I also tried to take a less traditional route for the end papers by not using a standard pattern.
