STROL-120: Tool Organization System

STROL-120 is the initial prototype for an integrated tool and hardware storage system, developed over the course of a semester by myself and three other students from Brown and RISD. The system, designed specifically for the Brown Design Workshop located in Brown University's Prince Lab, features both moving and fixed elements, unique geometry to maximize storage space, custom interchangeable storage units, color-coding, and full self-assembly.

Our goal was to design a tool storage system for the BDW that was intuitive, highly visible, adaptable, durable, and attractive.
Rendering of the entire STROL-120 storage system. Fixed and moving components allow for the travel of tools throughout the large Design Workshop while maintaining order, and color-coding assists with the easy return of tools.
The system relies on a skeleton of 80/20 for structural support, ease of assembly, and to enable the attachment of tool-holders. A series of y-shaped laser cut aluminum centerpieces attach to the 80/20 ribs, binding the three walls of the cart together.
Tool holders, designed in SolidWorks and laser cut from sheet aluminum, are attached with thumb screws through slots in each panel that align with the 80/20 skeleton inside. Hand-tightening the screw fixes the holder securely to the face of panel, making it relatively easy to replace tool holders or reconfigure the layout of the system.
