KIENDINH - 3D Animated Short Film about Gender Stereotypes
KIENDINH is a graduation capstone project of 3 graphic design students from FPT University.
An 8-minute 3D short film was completed from rough concept to final production within 4 months.
---
KIENDINH establishes a set in a giant birdcage filled with Gender Stereotypes. In there, the main character is two puppets: DAON and his best friend PUNU have to perform a special play every day for a specified time and are supervised by mysterious forces around the cage. They have to struggle with many difficulties and try to find a way to release themselves from the shackles that hold them back.
KIENDINH is made to raise audiences' awareness of the harmful effects of Gender Stereotypes, and at the same time join hands to fight and eliminate them to gradually move towards gender equality in society.

01/ RESEARCH
By defining the topic as Gender Stereotypes, we started to search, select information from many academic reports and conducted a survey on approximately 1500 people before producing KIENDINH short film.
With only 4 months to complete the full 8-minute film, we have developed an optimal workflow that allows for 3 lines of production that still support each other throughout the stages.
---
02/ PRE-PRODUCTION
Once the story was finished, we started to create storyboard systems right away. Each frame in the storyboard is completed with the aim of ensuring being aesthetic and informative.
Animatic storyboard was solved in Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro.
"KIENDINH - Storyboard" has 9 main sections, estimate over 200 scenes and around 6-7 minutes.

03/ PRODUCTION
There are total of 5 Characters and 7 Backgrounds, so all of them were designed in a parallel flow whenever the storyboard was done. The process of development: Searching for references, sketching, and finalizing 2D concepts with color.
The 2nd stage of production process continued with Modeling, Texturing, Compositing, creating VFX and other tasks as soon as the 2D final concepts were done.
The names of the two main characters "PUNU and DAON" stand for "PHỤ NỮ và ĐÀN ÔNG" in Vietnamese,
meaning "Women and Men" in English.
