The Rio do Rasto Formation is a
geological unit from the South region of Brazil, and it's dated to the
Late Permian period (~255 millions of years ago). It is rich in both fauna and flora of a kind so long extinct that look alien to us now.

Small fish provide a cleaning service for Bageherpeton. Two Paranaichthys carefully watch the scene. A Xenacanthus swims among Calamites stems. There are also some bivalve species and Glossopteris and fern leaves found in the same Formation.

A fragmentary skull of a tapinocephalid was found at this geological formation. Tapinocephalids were big hervivorous synapsids (more close to us than to reptiles) whose skull roof was very thick and probably suited for headbutting.
