Badger Baiting Project

My brief for this project was to delve into the issue of badger baiting within the UK and to bring public awareness to it by developing a cohesive collection of artworks. I worked on these pieces by myself and developed them over a series of weeks eventually settling on a postcard format as I felt these might reach a wider audience due to being passed around. Making sure I understood the topic thoroughly was key in order to convey the message appropriately, so the research aspect was extensive and lead me to approach the brief in different ways using a variety of mediums. I also worked briefly with the criminology department of Portsmouth University to gain relevant information on the topic which was hugely insightful. The end results were created in a mix of digital drawing and line drawing by hand. For each individual postcard I tried to come at it from a slightly different angle to bring about various emotions from the viewer. By changing the aspect of the cards but maintaining the same colour scheme, each piece became more interesting and although each are from the same perspective, I made sure to maintain the same badger throughout all four cards. The main part of this project was to put focus on the badgers at risk so including the contact details of the relevant forces was extremely important and made sure that the severity of the issue was not lost within the artwork. This will hopefully help combat the prosecution these animals face and one day they might truly be free from harm.
