~ Task 1 . Line Drawings ~
I started my line drawing exploration with pairs. As you can see I have a photo I took of flowers as well as a photo of me and my brother when we were younger. I tried to keep the lines simple and slightly thicker to not clutter the image. I chose not to include faces of the drawing of me and my brother as it thought there was already a lot of depth within the dress and I did not want to take away from that.
I then moved onto more simplistic drawing to see if I would prefer them. The first image is my mother holding a branch of fruit in our house in Portugal. I chose this image as I thought it has a good amount of texture/ folds within the shirt as well as the fruit and leaves themselves. The second photo is of I took from my entrance portfolio for Ryerson. I chose this one as I thought my dress draped nicely creating some lines as well as the flowers within my hat.
~ Task 2 . Tonal Mapping ~
I started task two in grayscale as I wanted to get the perspective of light, and where the shadow and highlights should go. My first trial (on the left) I layered the colors on top of each other and left some of the white page visible. I liked the outcome of the layering but didn't really like the blank space between the colors. I then tried adding a base color to the whole image, and then layering the lighter and darker shades on top. I really liked how this came out and I used the drawing tool on illustrator to create the shapes.
I then decided to try and add colors. I started with the red, yellow and blue color scheme but thought the contrast was too high and decided to switch it to a monochromatic blue color scheme. In both of these I used the technique from my second greyscale drawing, being that I used a base color then added on top of that, as well as the technique of the first grayscale drawing, being layering each color on top of each other rather than beside one another.
Side note: They red, yellow & blue color scheme reminds me of heat readers.
~ Task 3 . Shape & Color ~
I started with testing out watercolor swatches and some pastels to see if I could get some cool textures and designs. I tried out cools tones, warm tones as well as metallic paints. I found the metallic paints didn't come out as I wanted and really liked the water color look of the blues and green, as well as the blends of yellow and reds.
I kind of wanted to stick to my pervious exploration with the gradient of blue. I added my blue watercolor swatches to multiple areas which I really liked and tried to order them from light to dark. I found my lightest sections were too close to my mid tone so I took the swatch into photoshop and lightened it until I thought there was enough contrast.
I am very pleased with this end result and feel the movement within the blue watercolor adds a deeper element to the illustration.
To me, the final ideation kind of represents the past and how looking back at it is bitter sweet. The cool blue tones shows sadness within the piece as its like your looking back at a past memory as a child.
Lastly, I decided to add some background elements to fill some of the white space.
