Ferlazzo Passage - Lipari, Italy

Ferlazzo is the part of Lipari Island where was one of the main pumice production site in the past. According to the historical data, the pumice was served to the port directly from the building on the coast. The only access to this building was a gateway where we call it Ferlazzo Passage. This passage is recently flooded due to the sea level, and the connection between the passage and the building is broken. The question is “how can we reconnect the passage and the building while making this passage attractive?”

The aim of this project is the creation of an experimental space for its guests by using the old construction technique of making masonry wall. As we know, the masonry walls were constructed with wooden scaffolding structure. After the construction of the wall, the wooden scaffolding was removed. That is why the holes are seen on every masonry wall. In this way, the preservation of this passage is aimed while offering an experience to the visitors.
