Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile RECORD LABEL RE-DESIGN

Because I chose to re-design an entire album for this project, I had to consider all of the elements that make up part of a vinyl record. This includes not only the album cover, but the back cover, inner double gatefold and the multiple labels which are printed and stuck onto the actual records. Nine Inch Nails’ 1999 album, The Fragile is one which is absolutely massive in length, running for approximately two hours and contains 26 individual tracks on its vinyl edition. Because of the album’s length, it contains three records per vinyl which meant having to design six different labels, two for each record, side A (front) and side B (back).

As the process of designing the record labels was towards the end of the project, I already had a prodigious selection of film photos to choose from. Before designing these labels I first selected three photos in which I deemed most suitable in communicating the continuous theme of the fragility of nature. I not only wanted to focus on nature for these three labels but more so wanted to communicate the way that the natural world juxtaposes the chaos and destructiveness of the artificial. After deciding on three final photos, I spent roughly 3 days designing the labels, predominately using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
