Sudden Cardiac Arrest Emergency Care

An experienced nurse from Texas, Jeanne Shipp is the co-founder and administrator of the Baymont Emergency Room. Jeanne Shipp also administrates Hospitality Health ER, a center that deals with emergencies such as sudden cardiac arrest.

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart cannot pump blood and is different from cardiac arrest, which is a condition that affects the heart’s rhythm. When a person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, their blood flow stops and they cannot breathe. As a result, people with sudden cardiac arrest lose consciousness and collapse.

Without immediate medical care, they can die. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can treat sudden cardiac arrest. In CPR, a person pushes the victim’s chest with 100 to 120 compressions so that the chest can fully rise between pushes. CPR is typically performed until a person can receive further assistance, such as an automated external defibrillator.

After that, the person must deliver rescue breaths for a few seconds until the other person regains consciousness. Rescue breaths involve giving oxygen to the other person’s body through the mouth. If the person survives a sudden cardiac arrest, doctors perform tests to understand the cause and damage to the heart.
