This project was the final assignment for the Editorial Illustration class (june/2021). The students received a proposal to create a series of illustrations and design for the Little Red Riding Hood (“Capuchinho Vermelho” in European Portuguese) tale. The illustrations consisted in full double-page, cover and backcover, endpages and spine.

At first I divided the tale in eight parts, in order to create a book structure. I sketched an illustration for each part and chose the one I'd make the full illustration, already positioning the text.
The illustration shows when the Bad Wolf approaches Little Red Riding Hood in the woods. I decided to keep the colour pallete simple, chosing earthy low-saturation colours except for the red hood, which was highlighted by this contrast.

Behind the characters, the background shows multiple trees, as they are getting lost in the woods.

Then I had the text in place and also added the page number accordingly to the structure.
For the bookends, I used the imagery of the trees as to create a feeling of entering the woods.
The cover shows the main characters. They are close and slightly entwined, the Bad Wolf about to catch it’s prey.
The tree imagery is present again, framing the characters.
The colour palette remains the same as the one in de double-page, highlighting the red hood.
The title, above the characters is a handwriting. It intends to create the nostalgia associated to grimm’s fairy tales.
For the backcover there is another tree-frame for the sinopsys, and it continues the trees in the front cover.
The spine is a plain red – the same as the hood –, with a wolf iconography in white. It -also shows the title and authors.
The assets were assembled in a simulation of how it would look like if printed as a book.
